Review and Commentary On The "Azarkant" Short from Andrey Klimov For Your Old School Science Fiction Campaigns

This is really nice animation I ran across and its perfect influence material for any science fictional retroclone or solid space based campaign. The animators that did this piece did a fantastic job of creating a world that anyone would want to do a 'dungeon crawl in space' in.

According to the  description of the video -
AZARKANT
In the future, a team of astronauts are sent on a ten year journey to a distant planet to find new life. On their way, they encounter a large, abandoned spaceship that is drifting in the orbit of a mysterious planet. They board the ship with anticipation of the great discoveries to uncover inside. However, they do not know what terrible secret this spacecraft keeps -- a nightmarish threat which is far bigger and scarier than anything they could have imagined.

 Using
AZARKANT
 For Your Old School
Science Fiction Campaigns

This animated movie shows exactly what can be done using a science fiction retroclone a small party and some interesting foot work on the DM's part. This might make an excellent hook for the beginning of a campaign into an uncharted sector for Stars Without Number.
Given the nature of the short there are all kinds of possible hooks here.
Where did the rest of the artifacts shown come from? How did this all get there? What will the consequences of the actions of the crew be?
All of this and more could be the questions your party of adventurers could be asking and finding out the rest of the story!
In less then 8:26 minutes the animator thrusts you into the world of Azarkant and then brings home the horrors as well as the epic nature of the piece. Its a very well done little slight of hand CGI work movie that shows that there are still new stories being done everyday.
I really look forward to seeing more from the worlds of
Andrey Klimov and his crew!

  1. Would've been more exciting 6 years ago, before the spaceship deathtrap motif became popular. Have a look at "KELOID" by Big Lazy Robot for some intense cgi skill...

  2. Lee the 'space ship death trap motif' has been used since 1977 for countless movies and shorts. "KELOID" by Big Lazy Robot is very good but there are lots of others out there. This situation is classic for OSR gaming. Thanks for the comment and there's more to come!
